Last December the Holiday Stroll ran on a Friday evening. The Valley Voices sang carols before the tree lighting, and kids lined up to see Santa outside Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory. Then it was over.
This year that evening is the first half of a two-day weekend. The Stroll still opens on Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., and the Community Tree Lighting is still at 7. Now a full Saturday of downtown events follows it on Dec. 5. The big weekend markets at the Fairgrounds and Majestic Valley Arena come before that, from mid-November through Thanksgiving. Downtown's new Saturday was added for a specific reason, and that reason affects how you might plan the next five weeks.
Why downtown added a day
The Daily Inter Lake reported in October that the Stroll is expanding "in an effort to boost commerce downtown." Barb McVicker, the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce's director of operations and community engagement, told the paper that organizers decided to extend it after hearing from attendees and business owners.
The event also has a new organizer. The Kalispell Downtown Association used to run the Stroll, and that nonprofit has since folded into the Chamber. This year the Stroll belongs to Downtown Kalispell Forward, a coalition the Chamber launched to advocate for downtown businesses. Its members are the Business Improvement District, the Tourism Improvement District, the Flathead Builders Association, the Northwest Association of Realtors and the Chamber.
McVicker said in the same article that the group is "hopeful to continue doing this in the future" if the first run goes well. That makes the Dec. 5 turnout matter beyond this year, since it will help decide whether downtown keeps a holiday Saturday at all.
The weekends before it happen on the edge of town
Kalispell's larger holiday markets don't happen downtown. They fill the Flathead County Fairgrounds and Majestic Valley Arena on the weekends leading up to the Stroll, as listed on Discover Kalispell's seasonal markets page:
| Weekend | Event | Venue | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov. 13–14 | The Market Beautiful | Flathead County Fairgrounds | Fri 5–8 p.m. early shopping; Sat 10 a.m.–4 p.m. |
| Nov. 13–15 | Holiday Extravaganza | Majestic Valley Arena | Fri 1–7 p.m.; Sat 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Sun 10 a.m.–4 p.m. |
| Nov. 27–29 | Christmas at the Fairgrounds | Fairgrounds Trade Show Building | Fri–Sat 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sun 10 a.m.–4 p.m. |
| Dec. 4–5 | Holiday Kickoff Weekend | Downtown Kalispell | Fri 5–8 p.m.; Sat all day |
The same Discover Kalispell page also lists a longer-running Christmas Market at Snowline Acres – The Collective, from Nov. 13 through Dec. 12.
Looking at the season as a whole, the weekend venue markets come first and take up whole weekends. Downtown comes last, and until this year it had only three evening hours to work with. The new Saturday gives downtown shops a full daytime shift at the end of the season, when gift lists are shortest.
Nov. 13: two markets, one Friday
The season starts with its busiest weekend, because two markets open the same Friday.
The Market Beautiful brings vintage and handmade goods to the Flathead County Fairgrounds. Friday is early shopping from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday is general admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ticket listing counts more than 60 vendors. Friday entry is $20 and also covers Saturday. Saturday-only admission is $10, and children 12 and under get in free. The extra $10 for Friday buys first pick of the vintage pieces and a second visit on Saturday. For one-of-a-kind items, getting there early is the main reason to pay more.
The Holiday Extravaganza at Majestic Valley Arena opens the same Friday at 1 p.m. and runs through Sunday. Its 2026 rules allow up to 165 booths. Discover Kalispell describes its vendors as coming from across the Pacific Northwest.
The hours fit together well. The arena opens at 1 p.m. on Friday and the Fairgrounds early shopping starts at 5, so you can do both on one Friday afternoon and evening. If Friday doesn't work, the arena stays open until 6 p.m. Saturday and from 10 to 4 on Sunday, after The Market Beautiful has closed.
Thanksgiving weekend belongs to local makers
Two weeks later, on Nov. 27–29, the Artists & Craftsmen of the Flathead hold Christmas at the Fairgrounds in the Trade Show Building. It runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Discover Kalispell lists it as an art show, craft fair and makers market. The details are on the ACFMT events calendar.
Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26 this year, so this show opens the morning after. Its Friday hours start at 10 a.m., which gives you an option for Black Friday that isn't a big-box store. It is also the last of the Fairgrounds and arena weekends before the Stroll.
Dec. 4 and 5, downtown
The Friday evening keeps last year's pieces: live music, Santa and the 7 p.m. tree lighting, from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday is new. Here is how the day lays out based on the Chamber's event page and Discover Kalispell's listing:
- 8:30–11:30 a.m.: St. Matthew's pancake breakfast. The Daily Inter Lake reports St. Matthew's Catholic School is hosting it along with a holiday market.
- 10 a.m.–4 p.m.: The Starlight Market Carnival, with games, face painting, festive food and local vendors selling gifts.
- All day: The "Find the Yeti" challenge around downtown, plus holiday programs at the Glacier Art Museum and the Kalispell Public Library.
- Weather permitting: Kalispell Parks and Recreation is planning events, including ice skating at Woodland Park if conditions allow.
- 7:30–9:30 p.m.: The Glacier Symphony performs Handel's Messiah that evening, according to the Kalispell Chamber calendar.
The pancake breakfast ends at 11:30, the carnival runs until 4 and the Messiah starts at 7:30, so Saturday has something going on downtown from morning into the evening. Last year the Stroll was over by Friday night. Organizers have said they added this day to generate more business downtown.
